June is here and that means it is time to meet our Cosplayer of the Month! While she has only been cosplaying a short time she has done some awesome stuff. Ramona Flowers, Gender Bend Aquaman, Raven and to name just a few. Add into the mix her amazing Fandoms, and wow…without further adieu, allow me introduce you to Lacy Lovick.
What was the first convention you attended and what was the most memorable part of that convention?
My first convention was Wizard World back in 2013. I had gone with a friend to meet the Weasley Twins from Harry Potter & had no idea what to expect when we got there. As soon as we walked in and onto the con floor, I was in awe. I felt at home. The cosplays were definitely the most memorable part! I knew cosplaying was a thing, but once I saw how many people dressed up, I knew I had to be a part of it.
What was your very first cosplay and why did you choose it?
My first cosplay was Ramona Flowers at C2E2 2014. I’m obsessed with the Scott Pilgrim series and she’s always been one of my favorites. I also used to have short hair that was always super fun-colored, so people always told me I reminded them of her. I knew that once I decided I was going to try cosplaying that she would be my first project.
What was it that interested you to cosplay?
I’ve always loved dressing up. Halloween is my absolute favorite time of year & I always go all out. I spread it out and dress up the entire week of Halloween. I just love bringing characters to life and using my creativity to make it happen. I always hated just having one time of year for it to be “acceptable” to dress up, so once I started going to conventions, I used that as my excuse to do it more often.
If you could pick only one fandom to cosplay forever, which would it be and why?
I would have to pick Disney. I’m a huge Disney fanatic and would love to start cosplaying more of those characters… but I guess that also includes the Marvel Universe now too, doesn’t it… 😉
What is the most challenging cosplay/prop/project that you’ve worked on?
– The most challenging thing I’ve worked on is probably my trident. I had the help of a friend who was teaching me about prop building, but we were just having such a hard time getting the pvc pipe to bend evenly and have the two outer prongs stay glued on. Eventually we got it though & after making it all gold and glittery, it’s become my most prized cosplay possession!
What inspires you when choosing new cosplay?
I have a huge “to-do” list when it comes to cosplays, but I always choose characters that I love first. My goal is to always bring my favorite characters to life. And after I pick those, then I can just go for the ones I think would be super fun to do!
What are some of the best things you’ve learned about yourself since you started cosplaying?
I’ve learned to just be open and let my creativity flow. I’ve learned to think outside the box and think more efficiently. I’ve taught myself how to sew (very basically..) and I’ve learned how to make things in ways I never would’ve thought to before. I’ve always been a huge social butterfly. I love meeting new people & with cosplaying and going to more cons, it has made my outgoing personality just thrive even more!
What is your advice to those just getting into cosplay?
My advice is to just go for it. People, including me, get intimidated when they see how good some cosplays are, but in the end, you just have to go for it. The cosplay community is accepting of EVERYONE. It doesn’t matter what you look like, cosplay is all about expressing yourself and making the character your own.
