As a huge DC Comic fan boy, this movie has been something I have been waiting for a very long time, so…here goes.
It continues several months after the war between Batman V Superman took Gotham and Metropolis by storm. Now kicking off the follow-up in Justice League, Batman knows something is lurking on the horizon with a Kal-El sized hole left behind. Batman is clearly feeling somewhat guilty, in a way only Batman can for some of his actions. It begins with Batman doing what he does best and that is getting the bad guy, and, essentially using him as a trap to encounter the beasts, of which he has been tracking and has discovered are drawn to fear. Upon trapping one and their immediate self-destruct mechanism, they leave behind a marking consisting of three boxes. After some research, and discussion regarding what is now known as the Mother Boxes with Diana Prince. At this time Bruce and Diana begin to recruit the others to come together to take on the threat that is clearly coming to the forefront.
The movie’s strongest trait is the chemistry between its heroes. Both Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot reprise their roles as Batman and Wonder Woman. New to the franchise are Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Ezra Miller as the Flash. It is without a doubt that Ezra Miller steals the whole show in this movie. He is brilliant in his role as the Flash adding a dash of humor, naivetés and all around fun to his character. They all do well in their roles and gel incredibly as a team on screen. The biggest problem is some of the characters aren’t really given enough time to develop and that really is most telling with Cyborg. Ray Fisher does well in his first cinematic role but there should have been more to him that what we were given. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman character suffered a bit with development too. The 2-hour runtime which Warner Bros had ordered may have done more harm than good. With story plot lines being constricted and the characters interacting for the first time, a bit more time could have been used to further each of these points.
The biggest character to take a hit at not being developed was Steppenwolf who was basically wasted. He is clearly a super villain and that is obvious to the storyline. The problem I feel is he was very simplified. He is not the most well known villain and if you do not read the comics, his character gets a bit lost. Seeing the movie could have done more to sell his story and connect his character to Darkseid. They also never really explained the Para-Demons, which also could have been given a little more connectivity to the story and the character. The fact is people are going to see this movie and have absolutely no idea who he is and his ties to the bigger picture and that’s a big problem.
Moving on, the action was great in this movie and one scene in particular that comes to mind is the battle scene. This explains how the Amazonians, Atlanteans, some of the Green Lanterns Corps and even Zeus were in a big battle with Steppenwolf and his forces for the Mother Boxes. It all my made my nerd heart skip a beat, especially seeing a Green Lantern get a nod after not having the best of times in the DC Cinematic Universe.
All in all, it was very simple plot, which once again leads me back to the 2-hour runtime and also the fact that a lot of reshoots were done on this movie. Yes, Superman did return as most, if not all expected he would and again because of reshoots it felt somewhat out of place.
It’s a fun trip no doubt and I really think many are going to love this movie. In the end, for myself, the more I thought about it, the more I felt the Justice League weren’t truly given the Justice they deserved.
