Who wishes that they could live in their favorite video game all the time. While some anime have tackled this subject before, most recently Overlord, Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody takes the idea to it’s most logical conclusion. The hero finds that living in a world he actually helped create has it’s own problems and he must deal with situations he helped to create.
The Catastrophe That Started with a Death March
Ichirou Suzuki is preparing a game that his company is getting ready to launch. While resting his eyes, Ichirou finds himself in the very game he helped create, but as a fifteen year old named Satou Pendragon. Attacked by enemy characters, Satou destroys them and finds that he is now one of the most powerful characters in the game. Meeting friends and trying to discover why this happened, Satou must also contend with scripted events that he must deal with.
In most anime dealing with people being put into a video game, there is a sense that the real world is in danger or that the people are there to save it. Death March says none of that, Ichirou is in a video game, nothing more or less. He also has the ability to change his skills, increasing them as he sees fit. He does not want to rule this world, but simply wishes to live in peace. This is someone who loves the world of video games, not the power he might have in it.
City Defense That Began With a Death March
The animation style is very clean and polished. The world that Satou comes to know is a classic RPG. There are elves and even a demon king running around. This brings up a question of what it would be like to live in a video game world. My favorite game is Final Fantasy II, or IV if you are using the Japanese numbering method. While I love the game, living there might be a little dangerous. Satou is not the hero of the game, but he comes into contact with the main villains.
There is a bit of the harem genre in this show as well. Satou has a knack for rescuing quite a few females who end up joining him on his travels. Don’t misunderstand me, these women are not weak and waiting to be rescued. One is a solider who ran away from her family when they tried to marry her off, another is a half demon creature who could probably take an army on. There seems to be no hint of romance so far, but you will find one women who you want to pair up with Satou.
Deeply Held Attachment That Started With a Death March
The show is only a few episodes in, and already I am curious to what brought Ichirou to this world. While looking around, I found some hints from the light novel series it is adapted from. No spoilers here, but Ichirou might not have been the first human to come to this world. Take a look at this series on Crunchyroll and see why it has captured so many people’s imagination.
