This year has seen many remakes of classic and contemporary games. The latest one published by Capcom is the Devil May Cry HD Collection which contain Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3. Critics and fans have been very critical of this saying that this HD collection is nothing more than the games given higher resolution. This should not be a factor against the release. As these games are often considered to be both the creator and the measuring stick in which all other games of this type are judged.
Dante is the star of Devil May Cry and starts his epic journey by losing his mother and brother. He meets a woman named Trish early in the game who has given him a lead about who is behind the murders. Dante makes it known early on as well that he only fights demons and is in pursuit of the ones that killed his family. Luckily, Trish brings Dante along to a massive castle where Mundus, the demon emperor, resides. So starts the long journey of Dante fighting his way through enemies to get to Mundus and redeem his family’s honor.
Even though the release was just yesterday, fans and critics are torn about if this collection should even exist. The only noticeable improvement has been that the game now goes up to 60fps. Some people have even claimed that this collection has made them question why they loved the series in the first place. These arguments seem valid on the surface but in reality, make no sense. Devil May Cry was a masterpiece upon its original release. The game made numerous best games of the year and even nine years after the release of the first game, it was considered to be one of the best games ever on the PS2. By saying this collection has added nothing new, is saying that the game was perfect the way it originally was.
Gamers who have never played the DMC series might wonder what all the fuss was about. They point to games like God of War and Bayonetta as being faster, more entertaining and generally a more superior game. Arguments such as these are invalid, because none of those games would have existed without DMC. If DMC is to be judged, it should be judged from the time period in which it was first released. This is just an HD collection, not a remaster or a new game. When Capcom releases DMC 6, which is very likely if you believe certain spoilers, then that game can be judged against the “extreme combat” genre that Devil May Cry started.
There are not many changes, but the point is, there doesn’t have to be. Capcom is simply bringing a past game forward to match the technology that we all have today. At $29.99USD, it is the cheapest way to experience three games that were universally acclaimed upon their original release. DmC: Devil May Cry left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth, so go back to the original trilogy to see why Dante is the best at what he does.
Devil May Cry HD Collection is available now on PS4, Xbox, and PC
