Brought to us by Modus Games and Iron Galaxy, Extinction gives players a deep story to follow in order to save the world. With fairytale-like monsters most of us have only heard of in stories, this game gives players a challenge in combat with its blood, gore and violence.

In this world, citizens were raised with tales of monsters and creatures that lurked in the darkness. They had no idea that one day those tales would become truth when the monsters came from the shadows to destroy everything they have. Known as “ogres” to us now, these massive enemies can only be defeated by those properly trained. Avil, the only person who has the ability to defeat what lies ahead, charges head first in to protecting his home while saving everyone else too. If he doesn’t conquer this journey, their world faces… well… Extinction.

Depending on what kind of challenges you prefer in-game; Extinction has many different ways to play. For those that like more of a zombie challenge, the extinction mode offers hordes of assailants coming wave after wave. The other modes consist of skirmish; innumerable battle scenarios and an open world option that lets players roam freely plus a lot of different side missions if you’re prepared to spend time on the game. A key note however is that players should be cautioned that just to watch the trailer, you have to be at least 18 years of age. At first it didn’t make sense but now I see why. After getting in to the fights, there are moves that cut off heads and other limbs, so just be forewarned about getting this game for younger audiences.

Like other games too, Extinction has a level system where players can upgrade weapons and work their way through the tree to get more abilities. This game definitely is skill based. Players will have to lock in their strategy early in order to find weak spot on the massive enemies, which are said to stand at least 150 feet tall. Fighting in this way reminds me a lot of Shadow of the Colossus and it’s fascinating. Another neat feature of Extinction is the ability to use the environment strategically during a fight. Everything in the environment is destructible, it’s a fun time.

A lot goes in to playing this game. From upgrading to side missions, there’s a lot going on. I might be biased but I really enjoy a long story line that has some depth, so I will play this game to the end. Originally I was a bit surprised at how dramatic the fighting became but I’m also very happy with the abilities I can use to keep fighting. Take your time picking this game but show it the respect it deserves when you finally play because it will be worth it in the end.
