Code of Princess EX is now available on the Nintendo Switch and is proudly brought to us by Nicalis. Originally released on the 3DS in 2012, this game can be considered a successor to Guardian Heroes. This hack-and-slash and somewhat RPG game is promised to have some revamped improvements but possibly not what we were all hoping for.

Following Princess Solange, the goal here is to fight monsters that are trying to take over the human race. Along the way, Solange gathers a team to help in the fight and journey of discovering the mystery behind the world being taken over.

Code Princess EX has over 50 playable characters that all have upgradable weapons and stats. There are also customizable RPG elements as well as a local two player co-op option. Two extra options include competitive and cooperative online play too, which can be fun going through the 30 different quests of the story.

All of this seems well and fine from the beginning but the doubts started when the noises started kicking in.  For example. The voice over acting was not hitting the target at all and this made following the story difficult. A more traditional voice would have been nice. Not only was the VO work hard to listen too, the background noises chosen for fights, such as screams of agony, never seemed to stop. Things such as this can really kill a game and the ability to fully get in to the plot. Even the soundtrack just seemed off as well. Maybe this is because people are just so found of the original soundtrack.

60fps is definitely an upgrade from the original but there still seem to be some issues when the Switch is used between the handheld and docking options. When docked and brought up on a bigger screen, the background still appears great but the characters have a strange disconnect in their outline. This may sound critical but these little details become a bigger issue after really getting in the game. Luckily the text however on the handheld is much larger and clear which is nice.

Overall, the game is still worth playing. Exploring the different modes and 30 different quests and seeing the 50 characters is worth the hiccups. Code of Princess EX could have been nicer if more time was put in to the graphic switch over and voice work but this can be overlooked for most. This isn’t the worst game ever so the rating will stand somewhere in the middle due to the issues mentioned that make our eyes twitch.
