Welcome to the Smackdown Review for August 14, 2018. For both this and Raw, I will go over what the big talking points were, pick the match of the night, and look ahead to the next show
Talking Points
Three Woman
Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Carmella stepped into the ring a few days before their match at Summerslam. Carmella did her best to sow distrust between the two best friends. Lynch admitted that she wanted to beat Carmella herself, but that Charlotte made that harder. Charlotte took the microphone and did some of her best promo work. She compared Carmella to the Divas of old, out of the era where women rule. Something seems off about Charlotte, as she looked worried about how she might beat Lynch
8 years
WWE put on a great three part video package highlighting the history between Daniel Bryan and The Miz. From their first encounter in NXT to their recent run in, everything was explored. One of the best parts was having Bryan and Miz talk about each moment, both giving a different view on their history. This is the match with the biggest backstory, a fight that could very well be the only thing people are talking about on Monday.
A Letter
AJ Styles talked about his history with Samoa Joe. He was disgusted with the personal attacks on his family. This brought out Joe in a suit along with a letter. Speaking softly, but with purpose, Joe read a letter from someone who said that what Joe said was the absolute truth. The person wanted Styles to lose what was most precious to him, the belt. The letter was signed by Styles wife. It was low-key, but still powerful. Was it real or just an act?
Match of the Night
New Day vs. Sanity (New Day wins by pinfall)
Sanity may very well be one of the best stables in wrestling. Their teamwork and aura give them instant credibility. The New Day have already wrote their name in the history books. While they might be known for fun, they can still turn it on each and ever night. This was another classic, as both teams might be in for a long rivalry if they keep this body of work up.
Conclusion
Cien beat Aden English. Jeff Hardy beat Shelton Benjamin. The Bludgeon Brothers destroyed three local talent. Charlotte and Becky Lynch beat Mandy Rose and Sonya Devill.
