Welcome to the Smackdown Review for August 21, 2018. For both this and Raw, I will go over what the big talking points were, pick the match of the night, and look ahead to the next show
Talking Points
Brie Mode
As The Miz and Maryse made their way to the ring, there was a solemn look in their eyes. Miz proceeded to mock Daniel Bryan’s retirement speech. This brought out the real deal, and there was no smile or joking around. What happened next was a back and forth which ended with Bryan telling Miz “You are a wannabe movie star cos playing as a wrestler.” Maryse grabbed the microphone and shouted her own insults. This brought out Brie, who proceeded to punch Miz around the ring. Bryan announced that at Hell in the Cell, Miz and Maryse would be facing himself and Brie.
The Lass Kicker
Becky Lynch came to the ring with no robe and no goggles to give to any young fan. Speaking from a place of deep anger, Lynch talked about how Summerslam was supposed to be her time. She questioned the fans loyalty and said that she was the best women anywhere. This brought out Charlotte, who tossed the belt aside and proceeded to brawl with her former best friend. The women’s locker room was called out to try and break it up. A nice touch for the women to get involved like the men
Wendy
AJ Styles looked a little unsure of himself as he came out for an interview with Renee Young. He started to to say he had lost his cool, but then proceeded to say he would rip out Samoa Joe’s heart if he mentioned his family again. Joe blindsided the champion and put him to sleep with the Coquina Clutch. He then addressed Wendy, saying Styles could not tuck the children in as he was already asleep. A dangerous and almost psychotic Joe full on display.
Match of the Night
New Day vs. The Bludgeon Brothers (No Disqualification Match) (New Day wins by pin fall to become the New Smackdown Champions)
You would think that a match with no DQ would favor the champions. Especially with Big E not at ringside. For the most part, Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston played punching bags, especially when Kofi was hit by an thrown announcer chair. The New Day slowly turned it around, eliminating Rowan and finally putting Harper through a table and getting the win. A brutal and fantastic match
Conclusion
Cien and Zelina Vega lost to Rusev and Lana, with some help from Aidan English. Jeff Hardy was DQ’ed Randy Orton, but still was able to put him through a table. Peyton Royce beat Naomi.
