Boxes are hit and miss when it comes to getting items to collect. For fans of big companies such as Disney or Marvel, boxes exist to surprise you with goodies. Usually the box is centered around one collectible Funko Pop! Vinyl that won’t be sold anywhere else. More than Funko provide these box services however, so picking the right one is key.
What are the different boxes you ask? Ones straight from Funko include:
Marvel Collector Corps
DC Legion of Collectors
Star Wars Smugglers Bounty
Disney Treasures
All of these are fantastic and come with specific items. For example, some Star Wars boxes will have a theme such as a Sith box whereas another will be a Rogue One box. Each box has a t-shirt, a couple of vinyls, maybe an item such as a cup or other useful item. For the other boxes, they too, will have a similar setup just with a different theme.
The Disney boxes tend to be slightly different with the items inside. A staple for these boxes is the mini tins that hold a mystery mini. Along with the exclusive vinyl there are usually things such as pens, stickers, patches and possibly a character from the Dorbz line.
These boxes are not a monthly subscription like some other companies offer. Fans can buy a box, as long as it is in stock of course, straight from the Funko website or at select retail stores. Expect to pay roughly $25.00 USD and whatever shipping might be. For the amount of stuff you get, plus the exclusive for that specific theme, this is actually a good deal. As a bonus as well, if the box doesn’t strike your fancy then you don’t have to shell out unnecessary money.
Other companies such as Pop In A Box and LootCrate both have detailed boxes that go out monthly with a subscription. But here are the main differences between the two.
Pop In A Box has different levels of subscription. Patrons can choose to get anywhere from 1 vinyl a month all the way up to 12 handpicked vinyls. A special algorythm is used to help subscribers avoid getting duplicates. On top of getting different pieces, customers can also choose what category they want. For example, customers can choose only movie vinyls or any other genre they prefer. No other items come in the boxes, just the chosen vinyls. Depending on the number of items you get per month, the cost can be a bit out there. The lowest price starts at $9.99 USD and goes all the way to $94.99 USD for 12 items a month. Ouch.
LootCrate, compared to Pop In A Box is less extreme. Their monthly box subscriptions have a theme that is announced every month. Sometimes these boxes have an exclusive Funko item, while other times there may be a Funko item that is not part of the Pop! category. Any boxes like this are likely to have a Dorbz item or other Funko vinyl that fits the theme. A good example of this is the gaming boxes. A Big Daddy from the BioShock game came as a fun item and is made by Funko but is not part of the Dorbz or Pop! line. These boxes too are packed with things such as shirts, household goods, rugs, posters and a whole lot more! These boxes usually cost around $15.00 USD.
No matter what type of vinyl you’re looking for, make sure to shop around. Some exclusives are only at one retailer while other releases require a subscription. Half the fun is choosing exactly which box you want and when!
Pop Pick of the Week: Niffler (Target)
One of the breakaway characters from the Harry Potter spinoff series, Fantastic Beasts, was the cute and thieving creature called a Niffler. Funko has recognized how popular he is and has given him the super sized treatment. Head on over to Target and ask at the counter since this big boy can not be stocked with other smaller Pops.
