Every now and again us humans and gamers have the need to scratch the itch for new and not very well known games. Akane being one of them in particular. Ludic Studios has now come with a different type of game. So far however, I’m digging it.

Immediately I noticed the Mature rating on the game and had no idea what I was getting in to, but that’s alright. Akane is an indie top-down hack and slash game with a lot of gore. Every once and a while as well there are images of cigarettes and of course weapons. All of this is wrapped in to a futuristic world.

Akane is in a place called Mega-Tokyo where she is going to face her last battle. With who you ask? The Yakuza! This arena arcade slasher got a lot better once we heard that part. With no particular story other than the general overview that Lucid Studios gave, the goal was to just see what happened. Killing masses of enemies seemed pretty simple.

For a game such as this, the premise is easy; shoot, slash, target specific enemies and more. The catch however is, Akane must make the effort to kill these enemies with one hit. So with an arsenal of different weapons to choose from, and a master to learn from, all of this seems easy to do. Until you learn your weapons however, you might get set back a bit. Some weapons create a long range sporadic bounce off the wall type movement while others target one specific person. If you feel particularly found of a Katana then that is available too. Some could say this is the arcade version of Kill Bill.

Overall, Akane is very fast paced, filled with weapons and a good time killer too. The downside is the emptiness of a story. Lucid Studios though is bringing the world new content and Akane is particularly fun for people that just want to unwind without getting too deeply involved in a plot. So if this is your type of game, gore aside, you better check it out while it’s still on sale.
