Welcome to Super Show-Down for October 6, 2018. For all WWE pay-per-views, I will go over every match, share the highlights and quotes, and look ahead to the next show.
SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day vs. The Bar (New Day win by pinfall)
Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were the members of The New Day who fought the Bar. The crowd was hot and loud, making this feel more like Wrestlemania. This match was up there in the matchups these two teams have had. This might conclude The Bar’s pursuit of The Tag Team Titles, and the New Day might have to find some new challengers.
Highlights: Woods and Kingston hit about fifty moves on Cesaro in the beginning of the match in succession
Sheamus throws Woods into a Cesaro Uppercut
The return of the Cesaro Swing!
Woods hits a backbreaker and then Kingston hits a top rope stomp
Grade 8 out of 10
SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair (Flair wins by DQ)
Even in a different country, people still love Becky Lynch. Lynch went aggressive early in the match, making Charlotte enter into survival mode very early. The Queen eventually found her edge and the match ramped up in intensity. Lynch at one point tried to bail on the match, but Charlotte caught her. Trapped in a Figure Four, Lynch used the belt for a DQ.
Highlights: Lynch pulls Charlotte through the ropes onto the floor hard
Charlotte uses the rope to stomp on Lynch’s extended leg.
Both women stand their ground and punch each other.
Lynch hits a Becksexploder on the floor post matchup.
Grade: 9 out of 10
John Cena & Bobby Lashley vs. Kevin Owens & Elias ( Cena and Lashley win by pinfall)
John Cena looks great, the training with Jackie Chan paying off. Cena was still booed, but there were more cheers. Elias and Kevin Owens kept Bobby Lashley from tagging in Cena. Owens and Elias look like a tag team, their movements very fluid. Once Cena got the tag, it was all over. We even got to see the Six Move of Doom, a Mandarin move that was like a knockout punch.
Highlights: Elias starts playing the opening to AC/DC “Thunderstruck” pre match
Lashley leap frogs Elias and Owens about four times early in the match.
Elias sidesteps a charging Lashley, and Lashley goes through the ropes
Cena gives a very nice speech at the end.
Grade: 7 out of 10
Asuka & Naomi vs. The IIconics (IIconics win by pinfall)
Peyton Royce and Billie Kay wanted a win back in their home country. Askua looks as if she is trying to be more fun, mocking The IIconics pose at one moment. The IIconics looked pretty strong through the match, while Naomi seemed to the strongest. That was until Kay was able to neutralize Askua and then they hit Naomi with a double team move. It was nice to see how genuinely happy Royce and Peyton was to perform in front of their countrymen.
Highlights: Royce throws Naomi into the ring post.
Royce and Kay continue that strange superhero stance from Smackdown.
Kay holds Naomi in a stretch then Royce kicks her in the head.
Grade: 6 out of 10
WWE Champion AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe (No DQ or countouts)(Styles wins by submission)
There was no pomp from AJ Styles, just a stare down as he and Samoa Joe started the match in the aisle. This felt like a fight, not a wrestling match. That was the perfect way to have this match, as it had that personal feel. The fact that tables and other weapons were not used immediately helped rather then hurt this match. When they were introduced, the violence ramped up. The bad knee of Joe was his downfall, as a Calf Cruiser made him tap out. The end of this rivalry and a hell of a way to conclude it.
Highlights: Styles is thrown over the table and immediately jumps back at Joe.
Styles’s kicks to Joe seems to power Joe up.
Styles does a backflip from the top rope into a DDT.
Joe does a uranage on a charging Styles onto a chair.
Grade: 10 out of 10
Ronda Rousey & The Bella Twins vs. The Riott Squad (Rousey and the Bella Twins win by submission)
There was some dissent in the Rhonda Rousey and Bella Twins camp. It seemed that the Bella Twins, more specfically Nikki, wanted to do everything. The Riott Squad was more together, tagging in and out and keeping their opponents isolated. Sarah Morgan got more ring time then she had lately. Once Rousey was tagged in, all hell broke loose. Rousey doing the double arm bar was awesome.
Highlights: Morgan’s kick to Brie was interesting if you know the story.
Rousey seems to make up suplexs as she goes.
Brie is slammed into the ring post hard.
Rousey does a double armbar to Morgan and Logan.
Grade 8 out of 10
WWE Cruiserweight Champion Cedric Alexander vs. Buddy Murphy (Murphy wins by pinfall to become the new Cruiserweight Champion)
It was fantastic to see the cruiserweight division given such a high spot in the card. Buddy Murphy was the babyface by the fact this was his hometown. You could see how important it was by how he was flying around the ring. Alexander tried everything he could, but Murphy would not be denied. The crowd erupted when he won. Murphy was physically shaking after the match.
Highlights: Murphy does a diving flip over the ropes.
Alexander hit a Michinoku Driver from the top rope
Murphy kicks out of a Lumbar Check
THE WHOLE DAMN MATCH!
Grade 10 out of 10
The Shield vs. Braun Strowman, Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre ( The Shield win by pinfall)
This match had a feel of a gang fight. The six men brawled around the ring even before the bell rang. Rollins was the one who was isolated. Strowman was acting much more heel, mocking the crowd. It was interesting that the hero of The Shield was not Reigns, but Ambrose. Keeping the focus on him with the story of will he or won’t he is a smart move. After an incredible sequence, Ambrose was the man who got the pin.
Highlights: Strowman tries a splash from the top rope
Reigns hits a Superman punch on Ambrose accidentally
Strowman hits a spear to break up the Triple Powerbomb.
Reigns spears a charging Strowman through the barricade
Grade: 9 out of 10
Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz (#1 Contender Match for the WWE Championship)
The story of this match was Miz going after Daniel Bryan’s injured ribs. Or so it seemed. After Miz was doing everything, it was a quick rollup from Bryan that got the quick victory. There was a camera angle that suggested that Miz’s shoulder might have been up, but none of the announcers mentioned it. Bryan will fight Styles at Crown Jewel, but don’t expect the The Miz to take this laying down.
Highlights: The Miz amps up stealing Bryan’s moves
Grade 7 out of 10
The Undertaker vs. Triple H (No DQ) (Triple H wins by pinfall)
The match was made no DQ, thanks to Triple H. Undertaker and Triple H are a little older and a little slower, but they still got it. Shawn Michaels started interfering early, while Kane was cut off by the referee. The match started to spill out the audience and weapons were brought in. Undertaker knocked out the referee and proceeded to destroy Triple H while taunting Michaels. Both men tried their damnedest to put the other down. It took two Sweet Chin Musics, a sledgehammer and a Pedigree to put the Deadman down. The post match beatdown says the battle between these four is not over yet.
Highlights: Undertaker throws Triple H over the ropes.
The call backs to earlier encounters.
Triple H puts Kane through a table with an elbow
The chair bends after striking Triple H
The final sequence
Grade: 10 out of 10
Final Thoughts: The order of the matches was a little strange, but it was a very good show. Styles/Joe, Murphy/Alexander and Triple H/Undertaker are the nights best matches.
