There have been more ports of games that are a HD remake or an updated version. For Square Enix, the problem was that the game they wanted to bring to the Switch was a game that was created with the sole purpose of only being able to be played on the Nintendo DS. The World Ends with You: Final Remix is an RPG that explores what happens after a person died. Was this port successfully on the Switch? That’s a little hard to judge.
Neku Sakuraba does not remember a lot of things. He does not know how he came to the Underground, an alternative version of the Shibuya district of Tokyo. He does not know what the rules of The Game he is forced to play. Most importantly, he does not remember how he died. Making friends, and trying to stay ahead of The Reapers, Neku must piece together the mystery of how he got here if he has a chance to either move on or come back to life.
World is about exploring the district of the Underground. You find different areas have a different sort of fashion code and must dress accordingly. Battles occur, and you must use the pins you acquire to attack the enemies. Your partner is also able to attack, and you must work together to win the battles. You will also read the thoughts of other people around you which you can use to figure out the backstory of the game.
When World came out about ten years ago on the DS, it was hailed as a fantastic game and possibly the start of a new series. While a sequel never came about, this version will be played on the Switch. This could mean that a sequel may be in development and Square Enix is testing the waters. In this version, a new part of the story has been added, which should be reason enough to pick the game up. The main question is how the redesigned battle system works.
The battle system includes a new control system adapted for the Switch, more specifically the use of the Joy-Con in addition to the touch-screen and optional co-op support for Neku’s partner. The ability for a second player to play is exciting, but one of the main points of the original game was that you had to manage both screens at the same time. The new battle system takes a little time to get used to.
Should you buy World? If you have never played the game, the answer is yes. If you have, the answear is a less solid yes. Created in between Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, World was a fantastic game. You may find few things new in this version but having this game in your collection is never a bad thing.
