Stepping away from the typical Funko reveals and going a bit in to the past, this will specifically be about how my collection got started. Everyone has to start somewhere before really getting in to collection Funko pops. My story is probably a lot like many others but my collection has grown since then and it’s nice from time to time to step back and really look at how, and why, the desire to collect became so popular.
In the beginning, I was subscribed to one of those monthly boxes that arrive every month. Usually the box had a theme to it, and at the time, I wasn’t an Overwatch player. Seeing as how I got in to the game a lot later than most, I had no idea really what all of the Overwatch collectibles were. Heck, I didn’t even like my first Funko pop, and I had no idea what they were really. They seemed to just be another figure that seemed cool to put in a package for fans. Little did I know that my first pop started a chain event.
My first Funko pop was none other than Tracer, Overwatch’s main girl. Now that I’m involved with the game, I was quite upset. Everyone knows that I’m a D.Va girl and a tank player. So, I was pretty upset with my pop. After getting Tracer however, I started wanting my star choice, D.Va of course. So I started searching for what I wanted. That was all it took really. After that the rest is history as the saying goes.
The second pop that I absolutely had to have was Qbert. Even though I didn’t grow up with the game, I thought the character was adorable and just had to have it and got one for Christmas the following year. Soon after that I was learning more about what chases were and what an exclusive pop was and suddenly I was searching everywhere for specific pops from the genres I really enjoyed.
From Harry Potter pops to gaming pops and Disney of course, I was scouring stores to find exclusives. Now, I have almost 300 in my collection of various exclusives. Later in collecting was when I found out that these pops had values attached to them which took my collection to a new level. The exclusive yellow Sonic the Hedgehog from the E3 convention, is a good example of one that I had to have above all else.
As the releases change to new characters and different variations, I now have turned to looking for the 10 inch pops that are usually hard to get ahold of. They are massive and fun to look at, but the boxes take up a lot of space (because I found out I also prefer to be an in-box collector). Somehow too, in the journey of collecting, I now do a lot of research on the figures I’m looking at and making very specific decisions as well on what exactly I want to add. Not everyone has to do this of course, but this is the snowball of collecting.
I enjoy adding to my Funko pop collection because of the various things I can find. Sometimes I get lucky and find something old. Other times, I just get something I want because it’s either shiny, or I want to finish a specific set. No matter how the collection comes together, it’s something I can, and will be proud of. The collection itself as well, is an expression of who I am too which is fun.
I’d like to know from everyone, how did you start your collection?
Pop Pick of the Week: Ashe (Blizzard)
Blizzcon had quite a few Pops! for sale. The surprise was that the newest hero in Overwatch was getting introduced as well as getting her own Pop. The leader of the DeadLock Gang, Ashe is always looking to make a buck or settle a score with Jesse McCree. The people at the con got first dibs, but she will be available for the general public soon.
