Given that Christmas is coming quickly, there are a few things to be said about what Funko Pop vinyls we should all be asking Santa for this season. Although it’s not uncommon to hear the term “grail” used throughout the year, around the holidays seems to be one of the most common times. Many different opinions of the term are out in the public which is confusing, so hopefully hashing this out below will give an overall idea of what a “grail” can be.
The most common theory on what a grail is, or can be, is an “untouchable” and most likely, a pop that is very expensive. Usually, these pops are retired, exclusive and very hard to find. But this is also where the dispute comes in because others believe a grail is just a pop that is highly sought after just to finish a collection no matter the value or rarity.
A good example of a grail would be the Tony the Tiger Ad Icon pop #08. There were only 2000 released and he is flocked. Since all of them were scooped up quickly, they are rarely seen now on the market. For anyone that collects this specific line, he is a must-have. Now in the price range of $500 to $700 USD, Tony is very hard to obtain. Usually, this is the number one reason people don’t end up finishing a full collection.
Other opinions on grails, however, include the thought that a grail is any pop that finishes a set, is above $30 USD and more than likely is a chase or exclusive to a specific retailer. Since a grail seems to be more a dream item, then collectors can dream as realistic or as vividly as they would like. Some of these pops are as simple as a common item like the Fun Bun from Wreck-It Ralph, or various pieces in the Star Wars collections. There really is no right way.
Now that the holiday is near, collectors will be looking for grails if they can find them, or maybe they will be asking for them instead. So get to know what your friends and family want first, or find out what they term means to them. Happy hunting!
