Platforming games are always a big hit mostly for nostalgic reasons, and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is just that, a platformer from developers Game Atelier, this game is a successor to the popular Sega Wonder Boy series. This side-scrolling puzzle game too has some fun surprises in store for players as they make their way through the game.

Players take on the role of a boy named Jin who is focused on stopping his Uncle Nabu. Jin’s uncle is using magic to cause as much chaos as possible throughout the kingdom. Jin does on a journey to set everything right. He comes across enemies and many puzzles as well as different abilities that will aid him in his quest.

Visually, this game closely resembles the old side-scrollers of the past, but this specific game adds in the ability to upgrade Jin and his abilities. The color palette is bright for the characters while keeping the background somewhat indistinct, so there is a good balance. The different bosses make a huge presence in the game and everything just feels like it should, but better in a more modern way.

Jin’s ability menu is probably one of the used elements in the game since he will collect six abilities throughout the game. Each ability is a different animal transformation, very similar to the game Shantae Half-Genie Hero where she too changes forms in order to make her way through the game. For Jin, he can become a snake in order to move around new surfaces or a pig that can discover hidden things. Each of these abilities will show up in their own menu. Other menus offer a variety of upgrades.

Gameplay is pretty straightforward here. Similar to Hollow Knight and how the game works mechanically, sometimes wall jumping becomes necessary as well as working your way through different vertical platforms before moving on. This is all a part of the puzzle element too. Oh, and you do all of this while battling different enemies. Some will even be in the water! For Super Mario players, the water levels will be very familiar, and maybe anxiety-inducing.

Overall, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a game that you can really sink some time in to. The visuals provide a colorful and comfortable backdrop, the music is great and the side-scrolling platforming throwback is something all gamers are familiar with too. This game is good for kids and families as well so pick up a copy and enjoy!
