As we know look ahead to 2019, we must take a moment to look back at 2018 and the video games that took up most of our time. Some of these were great, others had great potential. Here is ten games that deserve a place in 2018 history.
Best Game of the Year: God of War
Some of the best things about this game were put right in front of us. Visually the game is stunning, the addition of Kratos being in Norse mythology completely blindsided players, and overall, we can’t put it down because the journey is not at all what we expected.
Best Game We had to Wait For: Red Dead Redemption 2
If you like a good sequel and massive amounts of play time, then you’ll understand why Red Dead Redemption 2 is on this list. Not only are the graphics amazing but so is the story. The game is extremely immersive and begs that players keep on the trail to finding a better place.
Best BIG Game of the Year: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Smash is a classic, it’s the ultimate couch party game with your friends. With so many characters and the adventure mode, Super Smash Bros Ultimate keeps players entertained as well as feeling the need to keep working on their fighters so they can have the best experience possible.
Best Blast From the Past: Spyro Reignited
Remastered or not, Spyro is a great game. The action is enough to keep kids and adults alike busy and the characters are humorous yet witty. Updating the game was one of the best things to happen to Spyro, players can finally see an environment that fits who Spyro and the gang really are.
Best Game That We Didn’t Know was Setting up a Sequel: Far Cry 5
Have you ever sat on the edge of your seat thinking the story was coming to an end or thought the story was too crazy to have a legitimate ending? Far Cry 5 literally gave us both of those feelings. We just didn’t know that the crazy people were going to be the smart ones in the end, but now there’s hope for another game to sink our teeth in to. Plot twists are great!
Best Comeback Game: WWE 2K19
Sports games tend to be repetitive across the board but this year WWE gave us something different. Characters actually had a story and the players had the plot to follow. Players easily could jump into crazy situations that they had to deal with in career mode on top of wrestling in standard matches.
Best Game That Will be Great… With the Right Patches: Fallout 76
Although some would say this shouldn’t be on the list, Fallout 76 is still playable. With a massive map and a great idea from the developers, maybe the concept didn’t play out as well as it should have when launched. Still visually appealing, the story fell flat but caught the developer’s attention enough to create a patch. It’s still a game we wanted, we just didn’t get everything we wanted.
Best Final Fantasy Game that Isn’t Final Fantasy:
Octopath Traveller
Developers used a unique way to represent their environment, but it wasn’t just this that captured so many people. Each choice made also played a part in the story. With multiple characters to follow as well, the game never got boring. Strategically, players needed to be careful how they approached enemies or else they may have been up against a larger battle than originally expected.
Best Overdue Debut on Consoles: Monster Hunter World
Even though I had not played any of the other Monster Hunters, this release really grabbed my attention. From building a character that is my own and feeling like every quest could be my last, every moment spent in the game felt like I was making a difference somewhere. Being able to play with others too, make the hard work seem justifiable in the end.
Best Indie Game: Celeste
If you’ve ever had to get out of your own head you’ll know that Celeste’s journey is very real. Sometimes we all need to face the roadblocks we put in our own way in order to find what’s at the peak. The journey isn’t easy, but the view is worth it.
