David Szymanski and New Blood Interactive have dropped one of the hottest retro first-person shooters to see the light of day in a very long time, Dusk. Built with the ‘90s classics in mind, New Blood Interactive pays homage to games like Doom, Quake, and Half-life in this all out brawl for survival.

With skill in mind, players that are new to this genre will need to practice, a lot. Simply put, keep shooting and stay alive. Something is beckoning from below the Earth’s surface and players will need to keep digging to find out what is happening. Multiple level styles and layouts create a unique environment to keep Dusk from getting stale and the game has three different campaigns to get in to as well.

In addition to Dusk already being the best retro FPS at this time, the game also has some of the hottest metal music (by Andrew Hulshult) to listen to while shooting down cultists, dark forces, and everything else that shows up. On top of that, Dusk has so many different weapons that weren’t common to original retro games, which makes the excitement that much greater. Crossbows, swords, shotguns, and rocket launchers all make an appearance in the game and there are still more weapons beyond that.

With so many weapons, it’s a great plan that the developers built three different campaigns. Some are challenging while one of the others is a multiplayer mode against your friends. Assuming you’re quick enough to manage your weapons, the Endless Survival Mode will give you the chance to try everything out wave by wave.

While playing, the biggest thing to become apparent is the ease of controls. Not like the older games, Dusk actually has good game control that is fluid and easy to work with. Cameras turn and don’t cause much of a problem either which is great because you don’t want to get run down because of a camera error. Effects in the game, such as blood splatter, is upgraded as well. Even though not super realistic, the effect seems to be crisp compared to games of the past.

Overall, Dusk offers a lot of variety for a retro horror survival first-person shooter. The music is amazing, the levels are consistently different and the graphics bring about a feeling of nostalgia. All of the processes run well and the developers gave us extra by adding in multiplayer mode and campaigns. Dusk is literally everything ‘90s gamers want and more.
