Throwing it all back to the ’90s, ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove is here again with their newest release. Developers HumaNature Studios decided to bring back the essence of the original game, and add a few of the other elements from the second game to entice the mind. This casual retro adventure game is just quirky enough to keep the entertainment going. Since I can’t say that I have played the first three games, this was a new experience for me. ToeJam and Earl are on Earth to find pieces to their Rapmaster Rocket. Exploring the map and all of its hidden places is the only way to get everything back!
Simply put, this game is a top-down throwback. Navigating the map is the plan, but you shouldn’t be too predictable. There are others out to get you so hiding is your plan of action. You’re not alone, however. ToeJam and Earl is a multiplayer game, although you can play solo, playing with friends or even others online, is the best plan of action. The enemies are weird and wacky, and you have to find clever ways to lose your pursuers. Become a sunflower or dive in the lake, the choice is yours.
Can we talk about the music for a minute? Seriously, there are 30 different mixes in this game and they are amazing. These jams keep the game fun and fresh. There isn’t a time where the game lulls and when you think you should stop playing, you just can’t escape because the party keeps going. For a game about two alien rappers, the music is differently on point.
Levels in the game aren’t too hard to get through. Some will find everything very easy to get through while others will take their time and still progress pretty quick, in a good way. One of the best things about the game not being too tough is that players can (and should) explore all of the character options. Not only this, but the completionists will more than likely find the replay value to be pretty high. Going back to find all of the 49 achievements will be a must.
ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove is that rare throw back where everything feels both new and classic at the same time. Looking back at their history, the ToeJam and Earl games always felt like they were going to be really huge, and with this game, they are back in the spotlight where they belong. If you love retro games, but still want a new experience, this game should be at the top of your list.
