Back in August of 2018, Funko made some moves to take over the Stashpedia mobile price guide. The price guide showed the trending values of the Funko Pop Vinyls only which, depending on your own personal preference, was great, or horrible. Most people tended to side with the latter on that. Now that Funko has slowly made changes to what Stashpedia was, many people should be happier.
Despite the access to trending values on many different vinyls, Stashpedia was often slow at updating price information and much more. For example, the exclusive figures that have come out such as Ashe from Overwatch, took months to finally update in the system. Not only that but users were asked to submit their own photo of the figure and add the information because it wasn’t already in the system. Eventually, this lead to multiples of the same figure and different descriptions and more frustration.
The biggest issue to the platform in one aspect was the difference in current pricing information as well. When compared to the other popular platform, the Pop Price Guide, a lot of the information was scattered when in theory, both apps should have been collecting sales data from the same places. One would think that the consumer data would have lined up without major price differences. There were problems with the pp but not everything was terrible about it.
When using the app, scanning figures was easy. If you didn’t know if you were getting a good deal or not, you could easily look up almost anything you wanted and get a fair price estimate. This was particularly handy for new folks coming into collecting. By being friends with other users as well, you could share and look at different collections and talk about new things, leading to a great community. Overall the app was just user-friendly. Still unclear though is why Funko decided to take over.
The new Funko app still gives clear market information on price per figure which is great, but the takeover seems to be either a good business plan or possibly Funko protecting their own products. Unfortunately, no one really knows what the reason was, but they did make some changes that have been really nice.
Funko added the ability to finally add other products to a collectors list. For the folks that collect the Dorbz line, or the PEZ line, all of them can now be scanned and entered to show a well-rounded collection and its value. So many new products can be added which, for some of us, makes us a little calmer when decided what to buy. The next best feature was how easy it was for Funko to move everything already in your list on to their new app. There was no loss at all and you could still keep track of everything without going back and scanning all 500+ items again. In general, Funko completely expanded their line of products to fans and got many different people together with the addition of adding different collections all in one place.
As Funko continues to work on this new app, it’s possible that we could all see more and more changes. We could possibly see more community features, news features and more. We just don’t know what those things will be since merging can take quite a while. So keep your eyes peeled for all of the new Funko products you can now add.
