World War Z developed by Saber Interactive is a return to the zombie shooter games of old. While modern zombie games focus more on survival and building resources, WWZ is all about blasting zombies while trying to stay alive. More Left 4 Dead than Dying Light, WWZ is a return to the panic inducing feeling of earlier games.
There’s no goal to inject yourself with a virus here, all you have is your guns and your friends. Going from New York to Jerusalem to Japan and Tokyo, you will try to make it one more day among the living. Zombies in this rendition are not shambling walkers. Much like the cinematic version, these zombies are fast paced and able to build their own structures with their bodies.
Basically the biggest feature of this game that was hyped, is the zombie count at any given time reaches 500 zombies on screen that are coming at you. You might think you know what that is going to look like but when you actually see the zombies blacking out almost every inch of landscape, the goal begins very intimidating. Graphics and sound production are very high quality. Combined, these raise the anxiety level to its maximum effect.
The skill tree is divided in to two main sections. First is for the player. There are different types of survivors. Weapons are upgradable as well. Combining these two things together means many types of weapons and survivors can be crafted to get a variety of experiences and attributes. With that said, you can’t just look for the best weapon or character, you have to make it happen. If there is one main drawback to the game, the story is not presented as well as it could be. I played for about 30 minutes and was not quite sure what I was supposed to be doing or why it mattered. Perhaps that’s the point. The only real story is to keep living.
Overall, the problems come from the story-line. While people may expect a deep story, there just simply isn’t one. World War Z is well known for the zombie hoards but doesn’t give players much to work with. The first round of play time gives you enough to get in to the game and then after that the game becomes monotonous because clear goals aren’t set forth. For the players that love to goof around and hit a high score value, then the 500 zombie limit could be worth it.
