Welcome to the Smackdown Review for April 23, 2019 For both this and Raw, I will go over what the big talking points were, pick the match of the night, and look ahead to the next show
Talking Points
Father and Son
You knew that Roman Reigns was going to face some sort of retribution for his attack on Vince McMahon. It was Shane who came out to defend his father. He called out Roman, but it was Elias who was lying in wait to bring down the big dog. Roman vs the McMahon has potential, and adding Elias as their tool can work. Elias needs just a little more reason to do the McMahon bidding. And yes, the irony of Shane being upset about his father being attacked is not lost on me.
Lars
Lars Sullivan continued his path of destruction through the WWE. First it was Chad Gable who was run down. Then the Singh Brothers were abandoned by Jinder to be destroyed. R-Truth tried to avenge his beat down, but Lars simply was just too much. There might be only one person who can take down the Freak, and he is on Raw. Maybe Strowman will find his way to the blue brand?
Kofi
One thing that many people hoped was that after Kofi Kingston won the WWE Championship that he and the New Day would not split. They have not and the addition of Kevin “Big O” Owens has strengthened the group. Kofi can still do comedy, a change in demeanor would have felt forced and fake. He can still do the funny bits and then get the job done in the ring. It’s sort of what the New Day has always been about
Match of the Night
Bayley vs. Charlotte (Charlotte wins by pinfall)
Bayley might be the spark that the Smackdown woman’s division needs. The match ups are fresh and as she told Lynch, she has never beaten her. This match for a championship opportunity felt like a PPV match. Some people might groan at Charlotte facing Lynch again, but the time for Bayley should be brought along slowly. She deserves Lynch at her best.
Conclusion
Balor beat Andrade. Kari Sane beat Peyton Royce. Kofi won by DQ, but was attacked by Kevin Owens after the match
