Since the release of Days Gone by developers SIE Bend Studio and being able to see their preview in San Antonio Texas for PAX, many reviews have been mixed and often back and forth. This action-adventure survival horror isn’t the worst thing on the planet according to a lot of opinions that have been rising. Not every game has to be an explosive big hit that has created a brand new type of game style or element. So here’s what you’re getting in to with Days Gone.

There is a plot in fact that usually keeps any game afloat but this one can seem to lag just a tad bit. Mostly this is due to the pacing, almost like you get a start and get to know what’s going on just to have to wait for either a twist or an in-between time that just seems to last too long before the next big moment happens.

You play as Deacon an outlaw bounty hunter drifter that is nomadic in this post-apocalyptic world. Two years after the “Freakers” started to collapse the world as we know it, Deacon and his best friend Boozer, and Deacon’s wife Sarah all fled when the pandemic started. Sarah gets badly injured and is whisked away to an encampment. As time goes on, Deacon wonders if his wife is alive and safe, hoping to reunite with her when he hears that multiple encampments were overrun with Freakers. For fear of more trouble coming, Deacon and Boozer plan to head north before getting into trouble with rival territories and a whole new subplot begins.

Basically, if you’re into an open world zombie game and can keep up with the small developments in the story, you might just like this. With that said, however, the downside so far has been the issues technically. From characters just saying hello over and over to hordes disappearing, Bend has been working feverishly to patch the problems. Unfortunately, this created a huge patch, making the game probably the largest to download in PlayStation history. We’re looking at 20gb patch that has many bug fixes and upgrades to the environment as well. To be fair, the landscape has been somewhat sparse and the missions repetitive. Hopefully, the developers have added something new to the patch as well to fix mission issues but we’ll see.

Days Gone seems to be a “Zombie-lite” game. Deacon uses his motorcycle for travel and it can be upgraded however the player wants to manage speed and more. The weapons too, are both long and short range and can be customized to your settings. All in all, Days Gone is like a combination of every open world game and their good parts.
