Much like 99942 Apophis, this game seemingly came out of nowhere. Rage 2 which was announced shortly before E3 2018, comes to us from Avalanche Studios and id Software. Thirty years after the original game, can this first-person shooter manage to bring something new to the genre?

Walker is on the run in the wasteland that was Earth. Mankind has started to divide into groups and factions. The most powerful of these are called the Authority. In order to achieve complete control of the new world, they must find all the nanotechnology they can get their dirty little hands on. Walker must make new allies and use the nanotechnology to survive in the harsh new world.

The first Rage was a mixture of Borderlands and Fallout. The game was incredibly fast and had AI enemies that seemed to learn from your every movement. Rage 2 however, seems to coast more on the strength of its predecessor. Advancement in graphics has allowed a more realistic and colorful environment but the gameplay has not similarly advanced along with it. Post-apocalyptic settings are interesting but this has already been done before.

If there is one thing that this game should be praised for, the lack of a battle royal mode is certainly at the top of the list. Although it was an obvious mode to put into the game, the developers resisted that urge which they should be commended for. Rage 2 also claims that every vehicle in the game’s world can be driven. The main character can be customized in regards to gender, skills or attire. All of these seem like good ideas, they just don’t seem to offer anything new.

Rage 2 is not a bad game, but it’s also not a great one either. The setting is interesting but it is not as fresh as the first Rage. If you are a fan of the first game, you will enjoy looking around and seeing some familiar faces. But if you’re just jumping into Rage 2, then you might find nothing to really hold on to your interesting.
