Peanut is a nostalgic game that takes me players back to 2D games where they have to rescue their beloved from an evil character. The story follows Peanut, a small cute corgi tasked with saving BAE from Veronica Vet.
I appreciate the play style as it reminds me of the days of playing Super Mario Bros growing up but the design has some flaws. Most people when they play games like this, they play the originals rather than those trying to grab at nostalgic gamers. I found the controls to be difficult as it was all keyboard/mouse and no option to play with a controller.
The music was interesting but I tend to play these games with no sound if there isn’t any spoken dialogue. The game would be easier to get through if there wasn’t a time limit on completing a level. I suppose that’s part of the fun of this style game; the challenge.
If you’re a person that enjoys 2D games like this, then I would say give it a go. As far as story goes, we all know it has been done before in many retro games and doesn’t try to go far from that. Although, I do think it’s funny that Peanut’s girlfriend is named BAE, which brings retro-styled games to the 21st century with current lingo.
