Humanity has been wiped out, so says the robot only known as Mother. She is tasked with raising a an embryo to a child. Not all is as it seems in what appears to be a futuristic bunker.
The movie starts with a familiar song “Baby Mine” which most people remember from the movie Dumbo, so already my eyes are tearful as Dumbo makes me cry. Mother raises Daughter through the years and dotes on her like an actual mother would. She not only serves as the young girl’s mother but also instructor. Teaching her the ethics of humans and how one should act. She also warns her of the dangers that lurk outside with the radiation and possible contamination.
Things seem to be going find until a mysterious stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives at the door, wounded and scared. She appears scared of Mother and shoots at her, and eventually tells Daughter the awful truth of what actually is happening outside.
The mysterious stranger who only goes by Woman in the cast list, has brought items into the bunker that strikes interest into Daughter. A book with drawings of different people, including one that appears to be a boy about the same age as daughter, are found. Daughter meets with Woman many times regarding what lies she has been told by Mother. Mother and other robots like her are what caused the end of the human race (most of it anyways), which Daughter has a hard time comprehending.
The movie reminded me of video games I have played such as Mass Effect and Fallout with the science fiction aspect. Unless viewers have played the games mentioned, they may not know what I mean but I promise that it is there.
I enjoyed the movie and the end made me want more story. I doubt there will be a sequel, but if there is I hope they expand on how things turned out the way they did.
