It’s the end of an era. Robert Kirkman surprised us all when he announced a day before the release that issue #193 would be the last for The Walking Dead. So much has happened through the series. Read below for the highlights. WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!
Many thought the comic would go on after issue #192 when it was confirmed that the main protagonist that the readers have been following since issue #1 had been killed off. But last week, July 2nd, Robert Kirkman announced that the issue releasing on July 3rd would be the final.
So many characters had died to get to this point and it left many people feeling very bittersweet about the whole thing. In issue #192 Rick had been gunned down while in bed by Sebastian Milton, a spoiled kid with no filter and no regard for life. The feelings I had when I read were anger, that Rick could survive so much and that he was killed by someone who couldn’t survive on his own if given the opportunity. I felt like Rick deserved so much better than this.
There is a time jump from issue #192 to #193, I would say about 30 years at least. Carl is grown, has a wife and child and the communities rarely have to worry about walkers anymore.
This issue appears idyllic but just like in previous issues, there are problems that they have to deal with. There is a formal government and life appears to be much more simple. Most affairs are dealt with in front of a council of people or in a court. Characters like Michonne are no longer wielding weapons anymore and have grown old but not so old to remember the dangers of the past. They feel like the trials (apocalypse) had to happen in order for people to become better and now they are reaping the benefits.
It ends with Carl reading his daughter Andrea a story about the legendary Rick Grimes and what he did to create the peace they enjoy now.
Conclusion
If I’m being honest, I like the ending but I would prefer the original that Robert had planned, which he put in the end of the comic in the editors notes. I won’t spoil it because I believe that there is some mystery that should be left.
