The most patriotic game of all time, Metal Wolf Chaos from FromSoftware, has finally come to America. It’s strange that when the game was first released in 2004, it was a Japan exclusive. Now in a new port courtesy of Devolver Digital, you can now help President Michael Wilson take back America from his traitorous vice president Richard Hawk. (Or should I say RICHAAAAAAARD!) Metal Wolf Chaos XD might be a few generations old, but it is still just as fun.

Michael Wilson has a plan to keep America safe. He has created and wields an armored Mech called Metal Wolf. He is not prepared when his vice president Richard Hawk stages a coup. Wilson is forced to flee as Hawk creates a smear campaign that turns the country against him. Aided only by his secretary, Jody Crawford, Wilson will have to liberate cities as he makes his way back for a showdown with Hawk.

The game is insane. You pilot the mech as you destroy any enemies in your path. At the end of the stage is some enormous mech you must take down. As you gain materials and money, you can upgrade your weapons, a must in later stages. Everything about the game is over the top. Jody comes up with hilarious codenames for your missions. A reporter covering the news believes Hawk and says Wilson is destroying people. Hawk is so evil it feels like a parody. Wilson is fighting for his life and country, but he seems to be having a damn good time doing so. It all works since everything is played to level 11.

Mech games are not as prevalent as they once were. Metal Wolf Chaos XD realized that gamers want to get in the big battle suit and blow some things up. There is just something so satisfying about causing so much destruction. The action gets a little repetitive, but you won’t mind since the boss battles are waiting for you. Each one is different and requires a different strategy. New things are added, such as one battle with a timer attached. You might be in a mech suit, but Hawk has any army of them, bigger and stronger than you.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD became popular because it was hard to get. More people had heard about it then actually. Now that the game is available, does it still stand up? The answer is a loud yes. The game is fun to play, the story will have you laughing and cheering, and it is a genre that does not get as much love as it deserves. Pick it up and save America. As Wilson would say, let’s party.
