Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is an experience characterized by a tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and can move down the entire body. It is produced by triggers, such as hand movements, eating or certain sounds. There is a feeling of euphoria and it can be used for sleep and to help ease anxiety.
It started with a strange picture of some of the largest ASMRtists online profiles. A bed floating in the clouds. On August 31, the world was let in on a secret that has been a year in the making. The app Zees, a platform created by ASMRtists and created for the fans, is a place where ASMR can be enjoyed without the major hassles that other platforms have. The app was the idea of Gibi, one of the big stars of the ASMR community. Why create an app that focuses on ASMR? The truth is that Zees puts the power back in consumers hands.
This is not just simply a video player, as Zees wants to make watching ASMR more comfortable and in the best setting possible. This means that there are no loud ads, the bane of any watcher who uses theses videos to fall asleep. A soft relaxing view screen allows a viewer to get comfortable. There is now no need to set an additional alarm, as the app has you covered. Listen to the videos while your phone is off and download your favorites. With most, if not all, previous videos from the creators on the site, Zees will also have exclusive videos created solely for members as well as Q and A. For a community that prides itself on being connected to each other, this feels like a gathering of old friends.
A platform is only as strong as it’s creators and Zees has assembled a mighty powerful lineup. Alongside Gibi, you have ASMR Glow, ASMR Darling, MattyTingles and a host of others. One name I did not expect to see is Heather Feather. If you are a fan of ASMR, Heather was one of the OG’s and her videos are a masterclass in tingles. She has been gone for over a year, and the fact that she is back brings a smile to my face. Zees hopes to grow with even more creators down the line.
We now get to talk about everyone’s favorite subject, price. The service will cost 9.99 a month. Since there is no ads, the app must find a way to pay the creators for their time and videos. The price did not seem to be a big deal until I started reading some backlash to the idea. Let me throw out some counter arguments. Demonetization has been a problem for YouTube creators for a little while now. Some big names even took hits and the ASMR community seemed to be hit harder then most. This allows ASMRtists to create the videos that their fans want to see and not be at the mercy of an algorithm.
I joined You Tube Premium about a year ago. The reason was twofold. The first was I watch a lot of ASMR videos and I did not want ads popping up. The second was I wanted to give money to the channels I watch. I did not want Google to decide if this channel deserved to make money or not. I was the consumer and I wanted the choice. With Zees, I can make sure that the creators I watch are getting my dollars. If you support ASMRtists by supporting their Patron, buying their merch, having Premium or watching ads, great job. This is just another way to do so. I want a more comfortable experience and Zees is built specifically for creators and consumers.
Zees will go live on September 6 and the app will be available on both the Apple and Android store. I simply can not wait to see what Gibi and friends have in store. For a full list of creators and features, click on the link below.
