We all know someone who has a fear of dolls. I think if we all lived in the Child’s Play universe we would all be very afraid. The original doll of horror is Chuckie, the Good Guy doll and his stabbing tendencies.
Chucky wasn’t always a murderous doll, depending on if you’re watching the old movies or the 2019 reboot. In the older films, Chucky was possessed by a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray who had been cornered by detective Mike Norris in a toy shop. He decides to use voodoo to possess the Good Guy doll. He then ends up in the hands of Andy Barclay, who has been wanting this doll for a while. Someone should have told him to be careful what you wish for.
Charles then calls himself Chucky and wreaks havoc on those who betrayed him and the Barclay family. Even at the end of the movie where he seems dead, he is brought back in Childs Play 2.
There have been many changes to Chucky’s look over the years. By the time Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky come out he is looking rather ragged. His hair is missing in some spots, his face is barely being kept together by staples. In the newer films in the same series, he is possessing more than one doll at a mental institution.
The remake of Child’s Play that came out earlier this year puts a new, modern twist on the doll. The dolls are now being called Buddi doll’s and are actually high-tech AI dolls that can control other Kaslan products (makers of the doll). This Chucky doll is a malfunctioning toy due to a disgruntled employee who put him together. In this remake Andy Barclay is much older but bonds with the doll. Much like any AI would do, it learns about Andy and what he likes and doesn’t like.
While I enjoyed the remake of the film, I still prefer the old series because the soul of Charles Lee Ray was within the doll and was a very evil person. With the AI, I almost felt bad for it because it didn’t understand. The days of old Chucky are the true villain we all deserve.
