Anyone who has seen The Thing knows that if you’re asked to go to Antarctica for any kind of work to likely say no. Or have an irrational fear of Siberian Huskies. I know I did for a while after watching this movie.
Kurt Russel in his prime is the main character with a knack for using a flame thrower. Fire and anything charged is a weakness for The Thing. It is an unknown alien that absorbs and replicates its victims. I wish I could say it is a seamless process but it looks highly painful.
The Thing’s strength is turning people against each other. No one knows who to trust after the infection of the thing has spread. Anyone could be The Thing and that is what makes this horror movie villain so terrifying.
As you can see from above, there is no real true form (as far as we know). When it is mid-shift is when you can see the mixture of all the living creatures it has absorbed. Human or dog, it doesn’t matter. It is a terrifying sight to see and the graphic nature of this film makes it hard to watch. The ’80s were a great time for horror films because of CGI being in it’s infancy at this time, so characters such as The Thing look more realistic and gross.
For those that truly love The Thing there is a novella called Who Goes There? and a 1951 film made called The Thing from Another World to look into the lore of the creature. A video game was also released on the PS2 that received overwhelming success due to it’s cult classic rating.
If you’re looking for jump scares and gore, The Thing will satiate that urge!
