Most people think of Genie from Aladdin when it comes to making wishes. The Djinn isn’t that kind of genie. He will grant wishes, but not in the ways expected. There is always a twist…and a price.
The Djinn, also known as Wishmaster is a sadistic genie with god-like powers, but like any genie he is limited to how he can use it. In the first film, he is locked in a fire-red gem and is released by an unsuspecting appraiser. He then wreaks havoc on those he meets and tricks them into making vague wishes.
The Wishmaster grants wishes in exchange for souls throughout the film series, one of my personal favorites being when a prison guard in the second films wishes to slow dance with the Wishmaster for one minute, Compton style. To which the Djinn breaks the fourth wall by looking at the audience. We don’t see the scene but we can only imagine what happens.
The person who releases the Djinn is granted only three wishes, and on the third he plans to release his fellow djinn so they can take over the world and kill all of humanity. Which is a very impressive venture but he has troubles following through.
He is considered one of the most powerful horror movie villains next to Freddy Krueger and Pinhead, but because he is shackled to only granting wishes when a mortal asks it of him, he is still a weak villain in most peoples’ eyes. Don’t let that fool you because he is a master manipulator with great charisma, he has managed to trick many into wishes they never intended on making.
