Fans finally meet the live-action Geralt of Rivia as played by Henry Cavill. Initially, I didn’t think he was going to be a good fit from what I know of the character and the actor but I was pleasantly surprised. Read below for more.

Geralt is a witcher, for those unfamililar with the title, a witcher (also wiccan or hexer or vedymin or witchman; in the Elder Speech: vatt’ghern) is someone who has undergone extensive training, ruthless mental and physical conditioning, and mysterious rituals (which take place at “witcher schools” such as Kaer Morhen) in preparation for becoming an itinerant monsterslayer for hire as said by the wiki page for The Witcher.

Geralt is a person who doesn’t like to get into the middle of wars between people. So he says anyway, he has a knack for getting into the middle of disputes whether it is intentional or not.

Throughout the show we also see the tragic backstory of Yennefer of Vengerberg. In the games and later in the show she is seen as a beautiful, powerful sorceress but she wasn’t always this way. She had deformities that made her a target for cruelty. She didn’t know she had powers until she made a portal for herself to flee from bullies. Watching all eight episodes, I know that she is a force to be reckoned with.

Another character from the books and game is Ciri or Cirilla of Cintra, a princess with extraordinary power. She knows she is special being a princess but it goes much farther than that. Throughout the show, we see her flee from her land in search of Geralt as a plea from her grandmother. Geralt is her destiny, which we see in the story line for both Geralt and Ciri.

My Review

I own all the games (haven’t played them) and haven’t read the books but I have to say that I will definitely do both as soon as I have free time. The show was amazing and the story is enthralling. The character’s are likable and have depth to their history. I really, REALLY hope more will be explained in season 2.
