Released at the top of the year by Fantastic Passion, publishers The Game Grumps were excited to announce their very own second game Soviet Jump Game. Although the release came as quite a surprise due to the way it was brought up, fans of the group are already having fun with this early access side-scrolling battle royal.
Is there really a plot to this game, no. At least it doesn’t seem like it and that’s fine. There are some jokes thrown in and the characters are some familiar faces. Each character can choose their abilities in the lobby which is full of chaos and abilities. Just play around until you find something you like. When you enter the “tubes” your level will begin, and this is very random where you will end up.
Once you start, if you didn’t notice right away, Soviet Jump Game is a 2D game, so your mind goes straight to “get the coins!” and “hit the blocks!” just like Mario from Nintendo games. The catch is, you’re also playing a bottle royal where there are many other players in the level with you trying to knock you off. You must find surprises and power-ups to try and defeat your enemies so you can move on. This game is definitely not a royal shooter which makes it different from the beginning.
The downsides so far are frustrating. Since the game is in early access, glitches are going to be normal as the team continues to work it all out. Sometimes jumping and fighting feels, slippery. The timing is somewhat off, and the keys are hard to adjust to with such chaos. Not only this, but the game is lagging right now and in at least one case, a huge server crashed. One of the better parts to the controls, however, is that Fantastic Passion made sure that you can use a controller by going in to the menu. We should really be thanking them for that.
Visually the game is bright and busy. Very busy actually. The characters are all over the place and you can catch some familiar faces occasionally, such as Danny. Of course, the 2D part is just a trip. The game is literally a mash up of old gaming and new concepts and the promise is there to be a fantastic game. When levels are over when you die, you get a report card which is very reminiscent of the game “Papers Please” which is also a game with Russian style. Some people will find this somewhat funny. My favorite thing is the Super Smash Bros animation when you get tossed over the edge. That affect always makes me feel accomplished until it’s me.
Overall, Soviet Jump Game is still in early access and the bugs are being worked on. For the players already enjoying the game, great! The game is FREE too, so what do you have to lose? This is a completely different take on a battle royal and a side-scrolling adventure. I would prefer to wander off to collect coins, but that’s impossible considering people are trying to end you. Go check it out now.
