We have talked about the good and the bad about retro games. Today, we are going a little bit more neutral. The world of retro game has a very long history, getting longer every day. There are some fascinating websites and book that can give you more information about retro games and a little bit of history about them.
GameFaqs
This was one of the first websites I used when I stared writing about retro gaming. This Day in Gaming is the tab where games are shown according to release date and what platforms they were released on. This can be a fascinating and depressing search. That game you played when you were a kid is celebrating it’s 30 birthday? I click on the game will take you to another page with some more information.
The NES Encyclopedia
A much more specialized book, but a fascinating one at that. Author Chris Scullion lays out every NES game every released in the console. Everything is listed here, including a section of unoffical games that were released. The smaller titles get a few paragraphs as well as a picture and a random fact. You will pour over this as you learn about the history of the NES through it’s game.
Console Wars
If you were a kid in the nineties, the great battle was Sega vs. Nintendo. Blake Harris tells the story mostly from the Sega side, but everyone gets a chance to shine. If you are a fan, you will still find something new in this book. If you are up on your retro game history, you will smile as Sega holds a mascot contest and Nintendo works on a project called Playstation.
