When I first saw the trailer for Dreams, I was a little confused about what the game would be about. Created by Media Molecule, the game puts you in a world were you can create almost everything. New game can be created as well as short films and music. Once I realized that the developer also created Little Big Planet, the game made a lot more sense. Don’t think that this is just another installment of the former series. If Planet was High School, Dreams is college.

The game is basically a game creation system. There is a solo story about a jazz magician who has to reevaluate his life through different dreams. The big surprise here is that this story does take a little while to complete. As you play, you see what can be created in your own projects. The story has some surprising emotional moments. All this should wet your appetite for creating your own stories.

I said Dreams is basically a game creation, but that is like saying that the Titanic was basically a ship. There is so much you can do. While other game creation systems like Planet or Super Mario Maker have you follow a basic format, Dreams opens the world for you. There are so many different mechanics that you can implement. You can make remake a horror game that everyone thought was cancelled or create a mini game showcase. Some ambitious creators have even recreated games from past generations that no one though possible.

Games are just one aspect. Dreams puts players into the director’s chair in order to make short films. Think of it as creating art in the digital world. There is no limit to the things you can create. A little intimidated by the thought of creating? You can just play other’s levels, rating them as you go. If there is one problem with Dreams is that there might be too much to do.

Dreams shows that there is a market for those who want to to create more then just play games. The tutorials are very simple to understand and you might find yourself creating your own little world. A game like this is only as good as it’s community. Dreams has a very dedicated one. The game shows that fans can just be as creativity as the developers. With new content promised, Dreams might be around for a long time.
