Sometimes you just want to go back to your roots when it comes to gaming. Developer Pelikan13, has brought back a fan favorite by releasing The TakeOver . This game is more diverse than what you may have seen in the past. With nice graphics, new combo system and good music, there’s no reason you shouldn’t play this game.

The TakeOver is a side-scrolling beat’em up game with 7 stages and 20 different locations. There are only 4 playable characters, but you can swap these characters at any time when you use the Relay Mode. If you’re a solo player then great, if you want to play with a friend then that’s great too because you can also play via local co-op.

Most of us know at least one person that loves fighting games and that same person probably dominates with their button mashing combo moves. Chun-Li comes to mind with her super-fast leg kicks with this. Well, the combo system here is different. Players can now combine their kicks and punches to fill up their Super meter and release their final attack. More combos, means better outcome. Weapons are also in the game (each character has 1 item) but you will have to find more as you go. Sadly, you only have a tiny supply of ammunition so you have to really think before you unload.

The visual environment is gorgeous. By that I mean, the locations look somewhat real. This is definitely an upgrade compared to older games and brings new life to the 90s games we have seen. Visually these backgrounds are stunning due to the developer using real imagery and being dedicated to high resolution (1080p or better). So even if I’m not playing, I definitely want to watch how it all plays out. Other than the environment, the cut scenes are styled like comic books. You really get the best of both worlds here. Lastly, the music get you pumped up!

Here’s what you’re getting into if you think this is just another beat’em up game. The TakeOver has three difficulty levels, easy, medium and hard. Before you go straight to the hard mode, just know that the enemies will be fast and fierce! There is no continues and you have to start from the beginning! Conquering this game won’t be as easy as you think so keep working at it.

Overall, The TakeOver is full of great imagery, music and story. I like the addition of the combo system because in a way, you can’t just mash the buttons and hope for the best. There is literally a skill to this and you have to get better at it to keep improving.  The TakeOver doesn’t hit that wall where you want to quit for a while and everything plays well the way it should. You couldn’t ask for better than that.
