It seems that you can’t keep a bad animatronic down. The world of Five Nights at Freddy’s (or FNAF) has grown from that scary game to a multimedia empire. Scott Cawthon, wrote a series of books that retold the story for adults. In this new series, Cawthon along with with some other talented writers have now written a series for younger readers, Fazbear Frights. This is not FNAF World type of stories. This is not even Goosebumps. Think back to Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark and you will know what type of story you are getting into. Scott has said that these stories might fill in some gaps from the games. This is not simply just explaining events. You have to look at themes and do a little thinking. What follows is a look at the three stories and how they might relate to the game series.

Step Closer

Pete is fed up with having to look after his younger Chuck ever day. Ever since their dad left, their mother needs Pete to step up. A prank goes wrong leads the two to Pirate Cove and Foxy. Pete goes through the rest of the week having strange accidents happen to him. It might have something to do with the song Foxy was singing. About becoming a pirate and what body parts need to be removed first.

We step right into the supernatural with this story. The things that start happening to Pete are not done by Foxy. We see a scalpel seem to turn in the air to attack him. It seems that some Fazbear friends have the ability to put a curse on some unsuspecting victims. Freddy’s is open and doing brisk business in this story. The ending is great, with the foreshadowing happening very early on in the story.

Dance for Me

Kasey is living on the streets and doing whatever she needs to survive. everything changes when she steals a purse from a mother in front of Circus Baby’s. Inside are a pair of novelty glasses that project an hologram of Ballora dancing. The problem is that ever time Kasey puts on the glasses, Ballora seems to be getting closer. It seems she wants something from our hard living thief.

For the first time, the animatronics are not the villains of the story. It is fitting that Ballora fills this role since I remember Markiplier saying that she seemed to be on the player’s side in his Sister Location playthrough. The other thing to note is that Circus Baby’s seems to be a restaurant in this story, not a warehouse in the video game. It’s a good story and you root for Kasey the whole time.

Coming Home

Samantha and Susie are as different as two people could be. You would hardly think they are sisters. They argue and a doll seems to be the main point of contention. Everything turns halfway through the story and now Susie must protect her sister. Especially from Chica. A nighttime visitor who will keep coming to their house unless the sisters stop her.

The twist is the big part of this story, but I won’t spoil it here. Maybe in a more in depth article later. More supernatural happenings and there is a talk between the mother and her friend that seems to reference the missing kids from the first FNAF. The name Susie is important in FNAF Theory and if it is connected, this might be the most clear connection to the games these stories have put out yet.

Final Thought

A much more paranormal book in the series. We have stories that have some sort of Fazbear entertainment in each one this time. The third story could have an article written about it by itself.  The second story is now my favorite. The first story sets up what you are going to read in this book. And of course, the epilogue brings another part of a larger story
