Going Under is a fun, and funny, rogue like dungeon crawler. Team17 and Aggro Crab decided we all needed some funny in our lives and brought us a cool looking Silicon Valley failed start-up game. If you’ve ever worked a job (most of us) then you’ll know that some companies can just suck the soul right out of you. Luckily, Going Under pokes fun at big companies.
You start off as an unpaid intern named Jackie at a place called Fizzle. Let’s be honest, the interns always get the “best” jobs, right? Sure. Jackie gets thrown straight into the deep basements of Fizzle where Jackie must fight the former employees that have turned in to monsters. You and Jackie must work together to clear these former failed startups. Then maybe Jackie will get to be in the marketing department like promised.
One of the fun things is being able to almost use everything to fight with. Boxes, cacti and office supplies are everywhere for your disposal but they don’t last a long time. After a few uses the item will break and you also have to watch out for explosions. As you run through each office you gain skills and new weapons as well. Jackie can hold up to 3 weapons at a time. At other times the skill you might gain is strength (arms get bigger) and you will need to do a lot of choosing of weapons. If you get knocked out however, then it’s back to the beginning.
Once you have learned a new skill and become proficient with them, then you get to keep the skill, otherwise you lose it. Such is the way of the dungeon crawler games. Going Under is a casual game with fun looking environments with humor thrown in. In the background, some workplace humor can be found. You will either understand or not, there is no in between, so some people may not understand all of the humor here. At least players can enjoy the colorful environments and steady music while fighting through.
The only downside to the game that I can see, which varies per person, is that Going under doesn’t have much of a re-playability factor. Other than working on new skills, there isn’t something super strong to pull me back in multiple times. Overall however, this is a fun casual game with some great humor and the feeling like you’re accomplishing something when clearing each office.
