Scary games are the best! When you can play games with your friends and scare them, the experience is priceless. In Silence by Ravenhood Games brings an interesting monster, the Rake, to life in a scary environment. Take turns scaring each other or play against the AI to see who can survive and get away.
Currently In Silence is still in early access so progress and patches are being made but people can enjoy the terror all the same. As a group you end up broke down in a small, wooded area surrounded by houses, a barn and more. As you wander, you must find a way to repair your car before the Rake finds you. This involves fuel, wheels, a battery and more. This game is like Dead by Daylight, but not completely the same.
There is no day and night cycle here, it is perpetually dark with an occasional thunderstorm. Flashlights come equipped on your person and there are only two options to defend yourself. A beartrap comes in handy when you are quietly sneaking around, but if the Rake finds you, your best option is to use a flash bang to run away quickly. There’s one major catch to all of this though. You can’t make noise. The title isn’t In Silence for nothing. You can throw some rocks and try to trick the monster though.
Each member of your team can talk to each other, but when you do, an indicator is set off for the Rake to your location making it easier to find you. So, silence and good planning is your best strategy. With the most recent updates, team members can take turns being the Rake which takes the skill level up another level. Imagine only being nearsighted and you have what Rake vision is. The screen is blurry and all you have is a small map of exclamation marks to track your prey. The real terror in my opinion, is letting the AI take over as the Rake.
The Rake is linked to folklore from as far back as the 1600s but is widely known from Creepy Pasta stories. Some even compare the Rake to Slender Man, even though the resemblance isn’t the same in In Silence. This Rake has a huge mouth that extends down to mid-chest covered with blood and two massive spikes for hands. Part animal, part humanoid, the Rake is fast and fierce and likes to take heads off upon capturing anyone making noise.
As the game progresses, I hope to see more environments and maps. Right now, guessing where the car is can be deadly when you get turned around. Otherwise, In Silence is tense and completely terrorizing. Using what you have at your disposal is key. Play your cards right and you just might escape!
