So far with the end of the year closing in, Immortal Fenyx Rising is probably one of the better games to get excited about. Now that the new systems have released, such as the PS5, this game developed by Ubisoft Quebec is sure to get people excited if they don’t overlook the game because of the cover art. This single player action-adventure game is a real treat.
For anyone interested in Greek mythology, this game is for you! Without going down the long rabbit hole of a plot, here is the basic version. Zeus and Prometheus come together to discuss how to take down Typhon (one of the oldest and most powerful Titians). Typhon has sworn to erase all gods and humans because they have all been made with flaws. He intends to take over the Golden Isle and rule it his way instead. Prometheus tells Zeus a story about a human that can defeat Typhon, Fenyx.
Fenyx can be customized by the player and once that is all set, the game begins, and so does the plot. Much like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the game has a lot of the same play style as far as the dodge mechanic and climbing. IFR also has a large open world to explore too. Some have even gone as far as to say the setting is much like Breath of the Wild, but that’s not a bad thing. The environment is quite impressive and the developers did a great job of adding tutorial techniques that don’t feel annoying or abrupt during gameplay.
There are puzzles and side quests to find all over which makes the game fun and the completionist players very happy too. The decision to explore versus keep to the mission can be a big task, but this is also good if you want to stop the plot for a moment too. At almost every turn in the beginning Fenyx comes across weapons and skills. The weapons can be customized and skills follow a tree. To upgrade skills you’ll need Cahron coins which can come from chests or quests. So far, the puzzles don’t seem too terribly difficult but eventually Typhon’s monsters will become harder like the rest of the game.
Compared to Assassin’s Creed, IFR seems to have a graphic design that was set as an older game. Since the graphics are not super realistic, this could turn some people off. After giving the game a chance however, everything feels fine and the graphics can be overlooked. Ubisoft obviously put more time into their story and mechanics than the style this time, so this may be a hidden gem of a game.
Imagine the battle of Assassin’s Creed, but the climbing and other mechanics like Shadow of the Colossus. Both are epic in their own right, but when all of this comes together, you get an incredible experience. This is a game worth playing to the end. I just wish the facial expressions were better on Fenyx. Overall the imagery is good, the mechanics are great and their really isn’t anything negative to say about this one.
