The Legendary Super Saiyan. The one who was born with power equal or greater then most adults. The Saiyan named Broly. when the news was announced that this character would be returning in the next Dragon Ball Super movie, I felt that the time was right to reexamine this controversial character.

Burn Up!! A Close Fight

Broly only appeared in the movies, three of them to be exact. He is portrayed as being able to wipe out an entire galaxy. When the Z fighters first encounter him, it becomes apparent that Broly is insane. He is controlled by a device that his father uses. He also seems to hate Goku on sight. Eventually, Broly is freed from the device and is able to take on some of the strongest Z fighters and hold his own. He is defeated by Goku, but manages to escape.

He comes to earth in his second appearance. Contining his vendetta against Goku’s family, he targets Goku’s sons as this occurs during a time when Goku has been dead. Broly is able to beat all until they join togther to hit a Kamehameha. The force of the blast pushes Broly through the sun where he is finally defeated. A clone was created in a third movie, but we will only talk about the original Broly.

A Super Fierce Fight

There is no question that Broly’s strength alone makes him worthy of fighting Goku and the others. The problem is in his motivation. Broly hates Goku because when they were babies, Goku kept crying and angered Broly. That is it. That is the whole reason. Dragon Ball has never shyed away from strange reasoning (look at when Majin Boo almost became a good guy because Hercule spent some time with him) but this feels way off base. When Broly returns in this new movie, I hope a better reason is given.

Broly might be a character that inspires strong feelings, but this movie is actually written by the creator of the series. He has never had a chance to write Broly so we might get an entirely new character. There is a small part of me that wants some of the sillier stuff to remain. I enjoyed Broly in his first appearances and I wonder what a serious take might bring. We will find out in January when Dragon Ball Super: Broly smashes it way into theaters. Just leave the crying babies at home. Broly doesn’t like that.
