Crime anime is one sub genre that I have never taken a real look at. If you were to ask me what is the best crime anime, I would have a hard time naming one. I decided to remedy this and checked out Crunchyroll to see if there were any new series. Luckily, one had just started and I found myself in the world of Risvaletta. This city-state has a major drug problem and only a special group of detectives can stop it. This is Double Decker! Doug & Kirill, a cop show with a little fantasy mixed in.

Howl at the Two Suns

The name of the drug is called Anthem and the name of the department created to fight it is Seven-O. This special police force has two of it’s members team up in order to combat the threat. Douglas “Doug” Billingham is the best cop in the department, but his partner Kirill Vrubel has just joined and has a need to prove himself. The two will have to work together in order to stop the rampant use of Anthem.

The use of an experienced cop with a rookie is nothing new, but the world that Doug and Krill inhabit is not the mean streets of New York or Detroit. The first hint is that this world is not even on Earth is the two suns that sit in the sky. The people seem human like, but the drug Anthem gives users some abilities if they take it for an extended period of time. At phase three, they begin to mutate and even get superpowers. There is also a whiff that the people running this city are letting people use the drug. The members of Seven-O can not even charge people unless they move to stage two.

Farewell Detective Okappa

Doug is fairly led back, with an attitude that suggests his has done this more times then he can count. His specialty is a gun that fires bullets that can stop an Anthem user from mutating and actually reverse the process. Krill is a little more mysterious. He got this job after a hostage situation, but no one seems to know why. My favorite character so far is Travis Murphy, the chief of this division. Far from the screaming stereotype, Travis is very strange and seems to do things at random. The instance on nicknames for everyone provides some funny moments.

Double Decker! just started so head on over to Crunchyroll to get caught up on the first episode. The story of who or what is pushing the drug needs to be a little clearer, but the show is fun and is an interesting twist on the cop show formula. The other members of the squad should be strange as well, and we don’t have a villian yet. I will be returning to Risvaletta to see how the new partners are getting along.
