What happens when one of your most popular characters finally enters the cannon of the main series? Fans of the Legendary Saiyan Broly found out when Dragon Ball Super: Broly came to theaters. Would this character fit in and what would be changed about him?

The main plot of the movie is that Frieza is trying to collect all the Dragon Balls. On a distant planet, two of his soldiers find Broly and his father and they join Frieza’s army. This will bring them into conflict with Goku and Vegeta, as well as explain who this Saiyan is and how he survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta.

The biggest change to Broly is that his mortal enemy is not Goku, but Vegeta. He was exiled by Veget’s father because he was stronger then most, and he and his father have been training for decades to get back at the son of their enemy. This is immediately makes an improvement over his original story as the character is taken much more seriously.

Broly looks great, not the mentally unstable warrior from past films. He is also ridiculously strong compared to our main fighters. When he turns Super Saiyan, yes just Super Saiyan, our heroes have no choice but to run away, a feeling of surprise hitting the theater when this happened. Broly has no new form that makes him strong, the guy is just the strongest out there.

The biggest surprise was Vegeta. Always a bit of an anti-hero, Vegeta goes to some dark places in this movie and almost becomes a second villain of sorts. Vegeta here is more like his first appearance in the show. Broly might not have a beef with him, but Vegeta sure gives him a reason to.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a serious take on a fan favorite character who was not taken serious the first time around. The plot is simple and just an excuse for the fighting scenes. While part of me misses the old Broly, this new version might have a longer shelf life and even show up again, just not as the villain.
