Blumhouse has done something a little different for this New Year’s episode. One thing we don’t see often in horror movies is sexual orientation. This one surrounds a group of friends all whom are gay but the one girl in the group. They have the same ritual every New Year’s but this year is different…

Cameron is one member of the group that is reluctant to go this year to his ex-boyfriend Joel’s place. Joel has a fiance to boot and seems keen on rubbing it in Cam’s face. There is a lot of dysfunction within the group dynamics as they seem to act like they hate each other when behind closed doors.

Hannah is the woman of the group and has grown a little tired of the same antics every year of going to a gay go-go bar and being left alone. She is beloved by the group but she always feels left out of the New Year’s traditions they have made since 2013.

During this time, two members who normally join in this holiday tradition are brutally killed by someone in a leather mask that resembles a pig. They seem to know each member of the group personally so naturally the viewer will spend the episode trying to figure out who is knocking off members of the group and why.

There are quite a few people in this group with very fragile feelings and egos to watch out for when streaming this episode, so there are tell-tale signs of who is making an example out of this group of “friends”.

Personally, it wasn’t my favorite episode. I feel it relies on some outdated stereotypes of the gay community that can be seen in many other films like this. I did enjoy the symbolism that is conveyed in the male nudity that is seen throughout the episode, a person is most vulnerable or naked, when they don’t know who their true friends are.
