If you need a new game to get into, Streets of Rage 4 is worth checking into. Developers Dotemu, Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games, came together to create the sequel to Streets of Rage 3. Set in Wood Oak City, crime is on the rise and you and your friends can do something about it.

Set ten years after Streets of Rage 3, the children of Mr. X have come to take over the world by using music. After hearing of this Blaze Fielding calls upon some old characters to help including Axel Stone and Adam Hunter.

You can play with four local players or two online players. You still have disposable weapons, items to grab, special attacks and throws. The most rewarding part of the game is the part where you get rewarded for striking as many combos as possible. Some people just have this skill and can really conquer. This will earn you extra points. If you want to use a “star” move, you’ll need to collect the stars from each level.

Story Mode takes you through each level but unlocks a stage select after finished. Here, you will have a limited number of lives but you can earn more lives if you can rack up points. If you’re playing together, then you have to aware that if the whole group loses their lives, then it’s back to the beginning to start over. Once you make it through all of the levels, your score gets added to your lifetime score and you can unlock bonus characters.

The two added modes are the Arcade Mode and Battle Mode. Battle mode lets two players to fight each other while Arcade Mode throws a challenge to the players to clear the entire game with very few lives. Basically, if you want a throwback, then this is the game for you. On top of these modes, you have the option to check out the retro audio that feature tracks from the Mega Drive (Genesis) and the Game Gear versions.

Streets was always born in the 90″s. The side scrolling beat um ups were in every arcade. The formula dried up, but this games shows that the genre still has some fight in it. Sometimes, you don’t want complex game mechanics or a story you have to really dive into it. Playing this, you feel like a kid again as you take back the city block by block. If you have never played this type of game, this is a great place to start.
