Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? You got it, SpongeBob SquarePants! Purple Lamp Studios re-hydrated the 2003 original platformer and brought a new addition as well to the fun. With one of the longest titles ever, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated will get you excited for the nostalgia of your childhood.

If you know the Nickelodeon animated series, then you can probably guess what the game is about. Plankton is back at it again causing chaos trying to get the secret Krabby Patty formula. After crafting a machine to produce an army of robots that start taking over Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob and his friends must fight back in any way possible.

There is no secret to be had that this game is the same as the original, but it does come with some upsides now in 2020. Visually, Bikini Bottom looks great. The colors are fantastic and very renewed, like you would expect the world to look like. The music is very bouncy as well. Did I mention the different levels? They are all just as crazy as you would expect for an underwater town.

Players will still be looking for Patrick’s socks and the infamous Golden Spatulas in order to unlock more levels, get 100 and enjoy a little clip. Each character has their own skills that keep the game fresh and fun as well. Sandie uses her lasso to hover, Patrick can pick up heavy objects and SpongeBob carries his bubble wand for defense. You can choose who you like but you must go to a bus stop in order to change your character.

The biggest downside I see to this game is the lack of some new content. This is literally the same game just upgraded. Although the game is a blast from the past, previous players are left wanting more. Multiplayer is the one thing that was added but it is more of a small addition and not a part of the main plot. At least in the multiplayer section you can select your favorite character and battle it all out in horde mode.

Overall, I would still go back and play this game just because I liked the animated series. I also like platformers and the game is just upbeat anyway. Kids will love this but the jokes may not hit like they did in the past, but the nostalgia is worth it.
