Welcome to the Backlash 2021 Review for May 16, 2021

Sheamus vs. Ricochet

It seems that an injury last week changed plans and Sheamus tangled with Ricochet in the opening match. Ricochet looked fire up, as he was trying everything in his power to put The Celtic Warrior down. Sheamus looked a little unprepared at times. In the end, strength won over quickness and Sheamus was able to put the High Flyer down.

Sheamus beat Ricochet.

Askua vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte (Raw Championship)

Charlotte was a marked woman in this match, both Askua and Rhea not wanting her involved in any shape or fashion. Supriseling, it was mostly a one-on-one affair with the third women breaking up a pin or submission.Charlotte was sneaky, Askua was the underdog and Rhea was a straight monster. The ending was chaotic, but Rhea hit the Riptide on Askua for the pin.

Rhea beat Charlotte and Askua to retain the Raw Championship.

Robert Roode and Dolph Dolph Ziggler vs. The Mysterios (Smackdown Tag Team Championship)

Dominic was injured before the show, so Rey decided to go it alone. Rey was flying all over and out of the ring, knowing that he had to strike as fast as he could. Roode and Ziggler needed to tope him in order to take advantage of the two on one stipulation. Dominic came down and begged for a tag on the apron. He came in on fire.  A frog splash on Roode and the first father and son Tag Team Champions were created.

The Mysterios beat Roode and Ziggler to become the new Smackdown Tag Team Champions.

The Miz vs Damian Priest (Lumberjack match)

The lumberjacks were zombies from Army of the Dead! You might  not like this, but I howled when they came out. Miz spent the majority of the match trying to miss the hungry mouths of the undead. At one point, Priest and Miz teamed up to battle the zombies. Priest was able to get the pin and escape the advancing zombies.

Priest beat the Miz

Bianca Belair vs Bayley (Smackdown Championship)

Bayley was out to prove that Bianca was just pretending to be champion. Bianca was out to prove that Wrestlemania was no fluke. Belair hit a nice splash with a hair whip early in the match. Bayley started to lose confidence as Belair withstood everything The Role Model threw at here. Belair used her hair to tie up Bayley for the pin.

Belair pinned Bayley to retain the Smackdown Championship.

Bobby Lashley vs. Drew Mcintyre vs Braun Strowman (WWE Championship Match)

Lashley and Mcintyre immediately targeted Braun, both men trying to get him out of the match. The team up did not last long and the three men began to hammer each other . Braun hammed Lashley with steel steps, only to eat a Claymore that sent him over the barricade.  Mcintyre even threw Lashley through the LED board! Mcintyre was able to hit another Claymore, but a returning Lashley threw him out and hit a Spear on Strowman for the pin.

Lashley beat Mcintyre and Strowman to retain the WWE Championship.

Cesaro vs. Roman Reigns (Universal Championship match)

Roman kept Jey in the back, and for the major part of the match, it seemed he would not need him. Roman was a better wrestler, targeting Cesaro’s arm and shaking off any hits The Swiss Cyborg threw at him. Cesaro would not stop and slowly began to wear Roman down. The Head of the Table eventually wore Cesaro down and made him pass out to the Guillotine. Seth came out and attacked Cesaro after the match.

Roman made Cesaro tap out to retain the Universal Championship.

Match of the Night

Cesaro vs Reigns: Not the ending I wanted, but a match that made it seem that either man would win.
